Cisco Systems Inc. announced adding ransomware detection and recovery functionality to its extended detection and response solution, allowing for near real-time recovery of business activities following a ransomware attack.

Cisco unveiled its XDR service in April, offering visibility and deep telemetry over endpoints and networks. Adding ransomware protection is focused on eliminating the delay between the beginning of ransomware expansion and the snapshotting of critical corporate data. The enhancement is consistent with Cisco’s larger aim of a unified, artificial intelligence-driven, cross-domain security platform.

The rise of ransomware was highlighted in a recent report from the Cisco Talos Incident Response team, which detailed how the team responded to the most ransomware engagements in more than a year in the second quarter. Cisco XDR’s increased capabilities, such as automatic detection, snapshot and restoration of business-critical data, are intended to respond to ransomware attacks in their early phases, mostly before lateral movement occurs via the network.

The networking giant’s gains are also said to go beyond internal enhancements, including crucial infrastructure, enterprise data backup, and recovery providers in third-party XDR integrations. One such instance is its recent integration with DataHawk and DataProtect systems of Cohesity Inc., a data management supplier.
