A California-based data protection appliance and cloud developer Rubrik announced the extension of its current warranty to up to five million dollars for clients who incur losses from ransomware attacks on data protected by it. It will now take into its ambit the data saved on Microsoft Azure via Rubrik’s Cloud Vault technology.
With ransomware continuously impacting companies across every industry, the zero-trust data company has delivered a fully managed, secure, and isolated cloud vault service built on Microsoft Azure. Rubrik’s integration with Microsoft Azure has addressed the issue of air-gapping of critical data. It also provides end-to-end data immutability to ensure data is not compromised, corrupted or maliciously deleted. With cyberattacks increasing in volume and sophistication, customers will be better equipped to recover their data.
Last year, in May, Rubrik had first launched ransomware attack prevention for the data saved on their vault. In October, it introduced a ransomware warranty claim wherein the firm would pay up to five million dollars to recover the data protected by Rubrik, said Vasu Murthy, the vice president of products located in Palo Alto.
In December, Rubrik had introduced a cloud vault, a completely managed isolated cloud archival service developed on Microsoft Azure with an aim to help businesses defend against cyber-attacks.
Rubrik Cloud Vault is a product that was born out of a strategic partnership between Microsoft and Rubrik signed last August. Microsoft had made an equity investment in Rubrik to enhance the marketing activities and co-engineer products, said Murthy.
“Rubrik Cloud Vault is built on Microsoft Azure,” he added “It’s the first joint project of Microsoft and Rubrik to protect data on Azure. Microsoft is promoting Rubrik Cloud Vault.”
Rubrik’s ransomware warranty will be made available for free for Cloud Vault customers starting this Wednesday, said Murthy. However, the clients will have to meet specific requirements to claim the warranty.
For example, he said, clients will have to put in place best data protection practices and obtain the Rubrik Enterprise Edition. This edition is a suite that includes data protection, ransomware detection, sensitive data recovery, incident containment, and orchestrated discovery. Additionally, he said that clients must undergo Rubrik data health checks to ensure they follow best practices.
Director of solutions architecture at CMI, Jeff Guenther, was of the view that the introduction of Rubrik’s ransomware warranty to their cloud vault is a big opportunity for clients. He added that Rubrik’s cloud vault is priced well for a completely managed service that includes all egress charges. Moreover, clients get assistance in data recovery, and the ransomware warranty makes the deal much better.
Guenther added that even though Rubrik’s ransomware warranty is on a sliding scale wherein only those clients with multiple petabytes can get a claim of a whole five million dollars in case of a ransomware attack, the warranty is a boon for smaller enterprises as well.
“We have clients with under 100 Terabytes of data who now may not use Rubrik but who may now see a great value proposition with Rubrik,” Guenther added.
Experts’ view
“The opportunity for Cloud Vault is big because a lot of our clients send their data to the cloud and end up with a big sunk cost with Azure. It’s a win-win for everyone. Microsoft gets credit for selling Cloud Vault so the Microsoft sales teams get paid. And customers get increased security with an air-gapped solution they didn’t have before,” Guenther said.
“We will recover data; we don’t want customers to pay the ransom. We see companies pay a ransom to recover data, but often it’s too late to recover the data even if they can recover it,” Murthy said.
